The Poultry

Things have moved on around the property once again. A new house has been built for Mrs Pig, areas have been fenced off for the 4 breeds of pure bred hens. I have had a change of one breed of hen. The Anconas have been sold and replaced with Gold Laced Wyandotte's. We now have a good line of Rhode Island Reds with 2 roosters, Plymouth Barred Rocks with a well breed rooster were brought in, a fabulous line of Black Orpington's and the Gold Laced Wyandotte's. Also 2 lots of crossbreds, A black leg horn rooster for the white leg horn ladies and a Barnvelda cross rooster for the Shaver cross hens.

Showing the poultry has been fun, with 2 shows over the winter and one to come in October, Hawke's Bay poultry show. The Black Rooster won his class, the young Rhode Island Red Rooster was 2nd. I also took 2 Black Orpington Pullets, winning the class with one and the other was 3rd. Two Rhode Island red pullets went along as well winning the pullet class and the other 2nd also bringing home Runner up best Rhode Island Red. Not too bad for our second show! Then came the central Districts Show held in Marton. I took the 2 Rhode Island red pullets as well as the black Orpington's and my special little Gold laced Wyandotte to see how show stood up to others of her breed. Kiwi as I call her won her class. The better Rhode islands won her class as well as Best large fowl pullet, the other one was not looking as good, was unplaced. This was the national Rhode Island Red show with large entries. The Black Orpington Girls were 1st & 3rd again.

The houses keep increasing, With 3 large areas for the big lots of hens ( Barred Rocks, Black Orpington's & Rhode Island reds) 3 Smaller ones for the Gold laced Wyandotte's & cross breeds. Over the summer I hope to have 2 more large area ready for hens to give them more room to free range.

The sale of fertile eggs has started and I am waiting to sit some for my self. Especially the Gold laced Wyandotte's with the new Rooster and an other hen ( Goldie) who has joined Kiwi bird. They are such a pretty bird and very proud.

The Pigs

Mrs Pig has a new lot of babies (11 this time) which are about to be weaned. They are all sold off each time, may be one kept for freezer. She has a new boy friend who will stand to outside stud as well for a while. Mrs Pig will be put back to Boar in September giving another litter around December. She loves her new house and her dam to swim in. Talk about pig heaven!
